Northside's Drew ranked nationally

Northside defensive tackle John Drew was ranked the 180th-best best prospect in the country when Rivals.com released its latest rankings.

Drew is one of the two Bi-City players that are ranked in the Web site's most recent rankings. Carver linebacker Jarvis Jones is ranked No. 39 overall.

Drew is the only Bi-City that player that has verbally committed. Drew has pledged to Georgia Tech and is a four-star prospect, according to Rivals.

The 6-foot-3, 303-pound interior lineman had 65 tackles and eight sacks last fall.

Semis and some leftovers

Brookstone and Pacelli have both advanced to the semifinals for the first time in a while.

The Cougars won the 1981 state title. The quarterfinals has been where the Vikings have stumbled the last couple of years.

Pacelli will host Providence Christian on Monday with the doubleheader starting at 3 p.m, while Brookstone will travel to Fairburn, Ga., to play Landmark Christian.

Providence Christian swept Telfair County on Tuesday. Landmark Christian swept Lanier County.

Columbus and Shaw will attempt to join them.

BLUE DEVILS SAVE STARTER

Most teams hope to have an average starter to pitch in Game 3. Columbus High will have more than that when it faces Cartersville today at 4:30.

Junior Matt Taylor has followed up his successful sophomore year with a solid junior year.

Taylor is 9-2 with his losses coming against Brookwood and Troup.

The lefty gives the Blue Devils a good chance. Cartersville also has a decent starter with Chris Huth slated to start.

"There will be two quality pitchers out there," Columbus coach Bobby Howard said. "So we'll see what happens."

It should be a good one.

Shaw has to win two today

Shaw was one strike away from earning a split in its Class AAA quarterfinal series with Carrollton.

But the Raiders will likely need to win a pair of games this afternoon to advance to the semifinals for the second time in four years.

After losing 16-1 in four innings in the opening game, Shaw led 4-2 in the fifth inning when play was halted for a weather delay on Tuesday.

The Trojans were batting with two outs, and there was a 2-2 count on the hitter when the game was stopped. If Shaw had gotten the third out, the game would have been an official game.

“It was devastating to know that you were one pitch away,” Shaw coach Mike Getkin said. “But there is nothing that you really can do. It’s baseball. So who knows what is going to happen when we go out there (today).”

After waiting for two hours, the umpires finally called the game. Now, it appears that the game will be started over. The Georgia High School Association rules state, “When a game is stopped before it becomes a legal game – 4.5 or 5 innings – it is considered ‘no contest’ and any replay will begin from the first inning.”

Shaw and Carrollton will resume the series today at 4 p.m. The winner will advance to take on Stephens County.

The Raiders might need to rely on their offense this afternoon as they will be short on pitching. Brandon Day, who was Shaw’s No. 3 starter, suffered a season-ending dislocated shoulder during the second round against Burke County last Wednesday.

Cam Greathouse, who threw 66 pitches in Game 1, could pitch a couple innings for the Raiders. Gage McRae, Marc Eide and Dustin Averett are also possibilities.

Donte Williams, who struk out nine in 4 2/3 innings before Game 2 was called, will likely start this afternoon.

Third round almost set

Brookstone, Pacelli and Columbus High will all host a quarterfinal series on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blue Devils, who swept Spalding and Crisp County in the first two rounds, will host Cartersville in the AAA playoffs.

After traveling in the second round, Brookstone will host Gordon Lee in the A playoffs. The series will start at 2 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played Thursday at 2 p.m. Gordon Lee knocked off Aquinas 8-6 in the deciding game on Thursday afternoon.

Pacelli will play at home for the third straight series and host Jefferson. The game time has not yet been set. Jefferson beat Eagle’s Landing Christian 13-3 in the deciding game on Friday afternoon.

The Raiders, who swept Burke County in the second round, still doesn’t know who they’ll play. Shaw will travel to the winner of Dunwoody and Carrollton on Tuesday. Dunwoody and Carrollton split the first two games and are scheduled to play the deciding game today at 1:30.

Monday, May 12, 2008

Game times set for second round

Three of the four Bi-City teams that advanced to second round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs will play at home and all the game times have been set.

Columbus High will host Crisp County on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Class AAA, while Shaw hosts Burke County with the series starting at 2 p.m. In Class A, Pacelli takes on Baconton Charter.

Brookstone will travel to Savannah to play Calvary Day with the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Three teams will host in the second round

I watched as Pacelli crushed Turner County 14-4 in the third game of the series on Saturday afternoon.

This one was over before it started. Turner County starter Jeremy Stevenson didn't get a batter out. He walked two and gave up a single before being pulled in the first inning.

The Vikings will host either Claxton or Baconton Charter in the second round. Columbus will host Crisp County or Liberty County. Shaw hosts Burke County, a 7-0 winner against Cairo on Saturday.

Brookstone heads to Savannah to play Calvary Day.

Glenwood names football coach

The fact that new Glenwood football coach Chris Holmes doesn’t have any experience as a head coach doesn’t bother athletic director Tim Fanning.

“Neither did Tripp Henderson,” Fanning quickly points out. And all Henderson did was lead the Gators to back-to-back, nine-win seasons and two consecutive Alabama Independent School Association Class AAA playoff appearances.

“With our past experiences, we have had a good track record with our internal hires,” Fanning said. “He has a great work ethic.”

Fanning has seen Holmes’ work ethic over the last five seasons as he has been an assistant coach on the baseball team. Holmes, who teaches math and physics at Glenwood, has also been an assistant basketball coach and assistant football coach during his tenure at Glenwood. Holmes served as the head junior varsity football coach last fall.

Holmes looks forward to opportunity and hopes to build on the Gators’ success from the last few seasons.

“It’s a great opportunity, and it can be a gold mine here,” Holmes said. “There are some great facilities, and there is great support from the administration and faculty. The kids are going to work hard. Coach Henderson did a great job, and we are going to try to follow that up. It’s going to be tough.”

After having success in his first two seasons as a head coach, Henderson decided to take the head coaching job at B.B. Comer, a AHSAA Class 3A in Sylacauga, Ala., during the offseason.

What to do to make the playoffs in Region 2-AAA

Columbus High and Shaw have already secured a berth in the upcoming Class AAA playoffs, which begin on May 9.

Troup, LaGrange, Northside and Hardaway can still all make the playoffs going into this final week.

It's a little complicated, but I'll run through the scenarios as quickly as possible.

So here goes:

Columbus (17-1) - Secured the No. 1 spot (That is the easy one.)

Shaw (15-4) - Made the playoffs; Can secure the No. 2 spot with win over Northside or a Northside loss (against LaGrange) and a Troup loss

Troup (13-5) - Win its final two games and the Tigers will finish no worse than third

Northside (13-5) - Will finish no worse than third with wins against LaGrange and Shaw.
(It is the same scenario as Troup because if Troup and Northside both win out there will be a three-way tie. Troup would finish second, Northside third and Shaw fourth).

Hardaway (12-6) - Will make the playoffs with two wins and Troup loss or two Northside losses

LaGrange (12-6) - Will make playoffs with two wins
(This scenario is the most complicated as it would involve a four-way tie. But trust me, I am 95 percent sure the Grangers would be in. Hardaway would also be in.)

It will be a fun final week of baseball, and the playoffs haven't even started.

And Pacelli can wrap up Region 4-A with a win and a Schley County loss.

Hawks stay alive

Hardaway came away with a much-needed win on Friday.

The Hawks beat Northside 4-1 to tighten the region standings a little more and improve their playoff chances.

Hardaway is 12-6 with two games remaining. The Hawks will be favored in their final two games.

Northside is 13-5 and tied with Troup for third. LaGrange is 12-6.

Northside still has to play LaGrange and Shaw. Troup has to play LaGrange. The Grangers have to play Northside and Troup.

It's possible that there could be a four-way tie for third place. If that happens more than likely someone is going to miss the playoffs because of runs allowed. Look for teams to try and score as many as possible next week.

I am going to figure out some of the scenarios over the next few days.

Too close to call

It will be an interesting final week of play in Region 2-AAA. Five teams are fighting for three playoff spots.

At this point, the scenarios are endless. They will become a little more clear after Friday's games.

This much is certain: Hardaway and LaGrange neeed to win. Both the Hawks and Grangers' chances of making the playoffs took a hit when Troup beat Columbus High 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

For those two teams, it appears quite simple: Win out and get a little help.

This much is certain: Shaw wins one more game and the Raiders are in. If they win both, they'll be the No. 2 seed and host a first-round series.

We'll see how it plays out. Here are the standings:

Region 2-AAA standings
Team Record Games remaining
Columbus 16-1 Kendrick, Harris County, Jordan
Shaw 14-4 Spencer, Northside
Northside 13-4 Hardaway, LaGrange, Shaw
Troup 12-5 Jordan, Kendrick, LaGrange
Hardaway 11-6 Northside, Spencer, Carver
LaGrange 11-6 Carver, Northside, Troup

*Harris County, Kendrick, Spencer, Jordan and Carver have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Curious decision

When I was pulling up to the Russell County baseball field, I noticed something interesting.

Down the left field line, there was a giant hole. It was in foul grounds, but it was still a big hole.

So I asked Russell County coach Tony Rasmus about it. He told me that there was a problem with the sprinklers.

But more importantly, he said, "I guess they think our season is over."

Actually, they better fill that hole quickly because a win against Daphne this weekend in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, and the Warriors could host next weekend.

Or maybe it's foreshadowing, and they know the Warriors are going to lose.

Only time will tell.

Parade on Saturday

Everyone in the Bi-City area will have the oportunity to celebrate with the Kendrick girls basketball team one more time on Saturday.

The Lady Cherokees will be in a parade that starts at 11 a.m. The parade will start at Columbus Bank & Trust in Phenix City and will travel south on Broadway in
Columbus. It will end at the Columbus Government Center.

The Cherokees will also have a banquet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Luke United Methodist Ministry Center. The cost of the ticket to the banquet is $35, which will help defray costs of the championship rings and billboards. Tickets are available at the school.

Clarification and standings

I had never seen a coach confined to the dugout until it happened to Columbus High coach Bobby Howard on Monday against Shaw.

After Howard argued a call in the fourth inning, the umpires restricted him to the dugout.

I spoke GHSA media relations director Steve Figueroa, who compared being confined to the dugout to a coach picking up a first technical foul in basketball.

He said there is no penalty or suspension for being confined to the dugout. An ejection carries a two-game suspension.

With that over with, it should be an interesting final few weeks in Region 2-AAA and Region 4-A.

The Region 4-A title can be determined on Tuesday when Pacelli and Brookstone play. Both teams have one loss.

Here is a quick look at the standings:

Region 2-AAA
Columbus 14-0
Northside 10-3
Shaw 10-4
LaGrange 10-4
Troup 9-5
Hardaway 9-5
Harris County 6-9
Kendrick, Spencer, Jordan and Carver have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Region 4-A
Pacelli 5-1
Brookstone 4-1
Schley County 3-2
Taylor County 4-3
Grenville 1-3
Stewart-Quitman 0-2
Chattahoochee County 0-5

Kendrick's Tinker leaves

Kendrick is the sixth Bi-City team looking for a new football coach this offseason.

Ahmand Tinker, who coached the Cherokees for the last five years, said he has resigned as head coach and athletic director.

Tinker said he wants to get into administration and he is exploring opportunities around the state.

“I have enjoyed the camaraderie with the coaches,” Tinker said. “I am grateful for the opportunity that (Kendrick Principal) Dr. Edward Barnwell and the Muscogee County School District gave me to become a head coach.”

The Cherokees are the fourth MCSD team to replace their coach this year. Columbus High, Northside and Hardaway have all already hired their next coach. Pacelli and Smiths Station also will have a first-year coach in the fall.

Over the last two seasons, coaching changes have been a common occurrence in the Bi-City as 10 of the 16 teams have replaced a coach. Central’s Ron Nelson is the longest tenured Bi-City coach having coached the Red Devils each of the last 10 years.

Carver coach Dell McGee, who has coached the Tigers for three years, will be the longest tenured coach at one MCSD school this fall.

Messages left for Barnwell were not immediately returned.

Tinker didn’t have a lot of success on the field during his tenure with the Cherokees. He compiled a record of 13-37 and never made the state playoffs. His best season was in 2004 when the Cherokees went 4-6.

Even though Tinker didn’t win a lot of games, his legacy at Kendrick will likely be his ability to get players a scholarship. During his five seasons, he had 37 players sign a scholarship, including having 27 sign over the last two seasons.

All Bi City basketball

After a perfect season that ended with the first state championship for a Muscogee County girls basketball team, it's no surprise that Kendrick forward Janae McKinney was selected Ledger-Enquirer's All-Bi-City Girls Player of the Year.

She also was selected by the media as the Class AAA player of the year. It is the second straight year that she was the Bi-City player of the year.

On the boys side, it was a little harder. There were a handful of players than had an outstanding season. In the end, Carver's Jarvis Jones stood out a little more. The 6-foot-4 forward is the main reason the Tigers defeated Dunwoody and advanced to the AAA finals.

He was just a little better than some of the other candidates. It's the second time that he has been the player of the year.

The full All-Bi-City list will be out soon. So keep a look out for it.

Baseball standings and other stuff

As the regular season reached mid-way point, it seems like it is going to be an extremely interesting second half in Region 2-AAA.

Columbus has established itself as the region's most dominant team, winning its first 11 region games.

Shaw picked up a big win against Troup on Monday afternoon. The Tigers have now lost back-to-back region games. If the playoffs started today, Troup wouldn't make them.

There is a log jam toward the top of the region, and several teams still have aspirations of making the state playoffs.

Here are the region standings so far:
Columbus 11-0
Northside 8-2
Shaw 8-3
LaGrange 7-3
Troup 7-4
Hardaway 6-5
Harris County 5-6
Kendrick 4-7
Spencer 3-8
Jordan 0-10
Carver 0-11

* I think that is right, if not, it's close.

All-Bi-City selections

It's that time of year again. It's the most fun time of the year. Picking the All-Bi-City teams is always a challenge and a fun time.

It's a long process and a lot of time is spent trying to select the players that are most deserving of being honored.

It's not easy and someone is always going to feel left out. Like the NCAA tournament no matter how many players (or teams in the case of the NCAA tournament), someone is the going to be the first one out.

But the most interesting thing to me is trying to decide who should be player of the year. While the players of the year have been selected I am interested to see what everyone else thinks.

There are a lot of choices, but were are some of the options.

On the boys side:

Terrance Hill, Jordan

Steve Peterson, Jordan

Jarvis Jones, Carver

Alex Phillips, Smiths Station

On the girls side:

Janae McKinney, Kendrick

Mukia Myrick, Kendrick

Kelly Ellison, Hardaway

Kianna Pinkney, Glenwood

Let me know what you think.

Former Glenwood star receiving D-I attention

Former Glenwood basketball standout Will Coleman was a first-all conference selection this winter at Miami Dade Community College.

Coleman, who was a first-team All-Bi-City selection in 2007, led the Gators to the Alabama Independent School Association Class AAAA state title as a senior.

Coleman will play another season at Miami Dade before transferring to another school. Several major Division I schools have already expressed interest, according to Glenwood coach Dusty Perdue. Clemson, Missouri, Minnesota, UConn and Tulane are some of the schools recruiting the 6-foot-9 forward.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Alabama all-state team announced

The Alabama Sportswriters Association released its all-state team and five players were honored.

Glenwood's Kianna Pinkney was named the AISA player of the year. Teammate Alicia Nelson was a first-team all-state pick.

Glenwood's Scott Balkcum was a second-team pick, and Kanden Blackmon was an honorable mention selection.

Smiths Station's Alex Phillips, who trasferred from Glenwood after helping lead the Gators to the title last year, made the Class 6A second team.

The Georgia Sportswriters Association all-state team should be released in a week.

Rain outs

With the heavy rain that fell in the Chattahoochee Valley this afternoon, baseball games that were scheduled had to be postponed.

The game between Shaw and Columbus High will be played on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Randy Jordan Field.

The GHSA rules state that games must be made up on the first available day.

Drawing interest

It's seems like 2009 is going to be a good year for recruiting in the Bi-City. Everyone knows all about Carver's Jarvis Jones, but he is one of seven area players to receive a scholarship offer from a Division I school.

Central-Phenix City running back Orwin Smith has a handful of offers already, including Auburn, Alabama and Georgia Tech.

As the spring rolls around, I'm sure that number will continue to increase. But here is a quick look at some of the offers.

John Drew, Northside; Verbally committed to Georgia Tech

Jarvis Jones, Carver; Offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Miami, Tennessee, LSU and Kentucky

Orwin Smith, Central-Phenix City; Offers from Auburn, Alabama, UAB, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt

Marlin Sims, Central-Phenix City; Offer from Auburn

Jacovi White, Chattahoochee County; Offer from UCF

LeRon Furr, Carver; Offer from UCF

Ryan Campbell, Shaw; Offer from Troy

Greathouse leads Shaw to win

Wow.

Shaw's Cam Greathouse was impressive this afternooon. He struck out 13 and didn't walk a hitter, leading Shaw to a 1-0 victory against Harris County.

Greathouse was dominant from the opening inning until he recorded the game’s final out. The senior left-hander struck out two in the first and the side in the second. He struck out at least one batter in every inning.

Maybe even more impressive that double-digit strikeout total was ability to throw strikes. Greathouse, who has struggled with his command during his career, threw 76 of his 119 pitches for a strike.

Harris County pitcher Tyler Dent didn't deserve to lose.

Dent scattered three hits and recorded 14 ground-ball outs as he needed just 69 pitches in six innings.

The only run Dent allowed was in the third inning when the Raiders (4-2, 2-1) had back-to-back two-out hits. Howie Shackelford had an infield single and scored on Cain Fuller’s hard-hit double that rolled to the fence.

Carver gets it done

The Tigers did the unthinkable, and it wasn't even that close.

Carver jumped out to an early lead and then never trailed in the game. Jarvis Jones scored 13 of his team-high 28 points in the pivotal third quarter.

The Tigers led by as many as 20.

Carver now has the chance to win both a basketball and a football state title in the same school year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do it.

No one thinks it can happen

It you took a poll around the Macon Coliseum, almost everyone would pick Dunwoody to knock off Carver.

The only people that would give the Tigers a vote of confidence are the die-hard fans. I don't know what is going to happen, but I give Carver a better chance than most.

The Tigers are going to play much better than it did in the quarterfinals against Liberty County. And it would be pretty hard not to. Carver wasn't very good in that one.

Jarmon Fortson and Jarvis Jones aren't going to let the Tigers get dismantled.

In a couple hours, we'll see what is going to happen.

I will post updates throughout the game on our Web site.

Where the yellow jerseys?

Whenver it was a big game, Kendrick would wear its yellow jerseys. The Lady Cherokees haven't worn them the last year or so.

So I decided to ask Sterling Hicks, if the Cherokees would wear them tonight. He told me GHSA rules prevents them from wearing them. The home team has to wear white and the road team has to wear a dark color.

If Kendrick wore yellow every player would receive a technical foul. I told Sterling that would make the game more competitive.

He didn't think it was funny.

I don't know much, but I think this is going to be Kendrick's year. I guess we'll see in a little bit.

Glenn Hills girls win

GLENN HILLS 48, CAIRO 36
Jessica Morton made three 3-pointers, but none was bigger than the one right before the half.

Morton’s 3 capped a 7-0 run and the Lady Spartans never looked back, cruising to a 48-36 victory in the Class AAA quarterfinals on Saturday at Columbus State’s Lumpkin Center.

With the victory, Glenn Hills advances to the final four for the first time since 2002 – the year the Spartans won the AAAA state title. They will play winner of Carrollton and Franklin County on Friday at 4 p.m. in Macon.

The Spartans led 21-20 with 1:56 left in the first half before they scored the final seven points.

Morton finished with 14 points, while Ciara Lyons scored 17.

Ashley Holt was the only Cairo player in double digits. She finished with 17.

Turner County rolls

With Central-Talbotton having only one player taller than 6-foot-2, Turner County coach Eric Holland had every intention of taking advantage of his team’s size.

Turner County forwards Demetrius Ewing and Tray Pearce combined to score 37 points as Turner County cruised to a 73-52 win against the Hawks in the Class A quarterfinals on Friday
night at Columbus State’s Lumpkin Center.

With the win, the Rebels will play the winner of Southwest Atlanta Christian and Wilkinson County on Wednesday at 8:30 in the semifinals at the Macon Coliseum.

“The whole game plan was to get it inside,” Holland said. “That’s the way we wanted to play. We are a half-court team.”

Ewing led the way for the Rebels (27-4) with 25. He scored Turner County’s first 10 points of the second half and finished the half with 16. Pearce did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 10 of his 12. Champ Spikes made four 3-pointers and had 14.

Central (21-10) struggled at the start and end of the first half. The Hawks didn’t score their first point for almost three minutes, and Brandon Davis made their first field goal with 4:29 left in the opening quarter.

The Hawks only scored one field goal in the final 4:27 of the second quarter. The Rebels took advantage of the scoring drought, outscoring them 11-2 to end the half. Turner County led 35-22 at the half.

Davis led the Hawks with 15, while Domonick Steverson scored 12 and Xavier Carter had 11.

Calvary Day cruises

CALVARY DAY 55, TURNER COUNTY 45

Calvary Day’s Katie Covington scored 11 of her 32 points in the third as the Lady Cavaliers pulled away from Turner County for a 55-45 victory in the quarterfinals.

With the victory, Calvary Day (25-5) advances to the semifinals and will play the winner of Towns County and Hancock Central on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Natalie Paris scored 15 for Calvary Day.

The Cavaliers led 27-22 at the half before they outscored Turner County (22-9) by 10 in the third quarter. Covington scored the first five points of second half, giving Calvary Day its first double-digit lead of the game.

Calvary Day’s lead grew to as many as 17 in the fourth quarter.

Demetria King was the only Turner County player in double digits. She finished with 11.

Portal survives

PORTAL 67, TERRELL COUNTY 65

After squandering a 20-point, third-quarter lead, Portal needed David Buchannon’s last-second layup to advance to the final four.

Buchannon went the length of the court and scored a layup with 0.7 seconds left to give the Panthers a 67-65 victory against Terrell County in the Class A quarterfinals on Friday at Columbus State's Lumpkin Center.

Buchannon finished with a game-high 31 points for the Panthers, who will play the winner of Whitefield Academy and Hancock Central on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Macon. Shane Reese scored 15 and Thomas Busby had 10 for Portal.

Portal appeared headed for a blow-out win in the third quarter. Reese’s 3-pointer with 4:26 left in the quarter capped a 12-4 and gave the Panthers a 48-28 lead.

But the Greenwave didn’t give up and rallied to take a 59-58 lead with 2:29 left in the game when Quintravis Benjamin made a pair of free throws.

Terrell County’s Brandon Browner made a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left to give the Greenwave a 65-63 lead – Terrell County’s last one of the game.

Portal’s Chris Sapp tied the game with an 8-footer before Buchannon’s layup won it.

James McGill led Terrell County with 16, while Martavious Yarbrough had 15.

Terrell County girls advance

TERRELL COUNTY 46, SAVANNAH COUNTRY DAY 38

After Savannah Country Day took its first lead of the second half, Terrell County’s Shaylia Jester scored the game’s next seven points.

The Lady Greenwave never trailed again en route to a 46-38 victory against SCD in the Class A quarterfinals on Friday.

Monshay Thomas scored 21 to lead the Greenwave, who will play the winner of Southwest Atlanta Christian and Gordon Lee on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Macon. Jester finished with 14 for Terrell County (28-1).

The Lady Hornets (27-3) cut the lead to 40-37 with 1:56 left in the game, but never got any closer.

Katelyn Hilliard made three 3-pointers and led SCD with 15. Katherine Dotson scored nine.

The Hornets dictated the pace of the game in the first half, but Terrell County led 18-17 at the half.

Hardaway finds new coach

After leading to Pacelli to back-to-back playoff appearances, Jeff Battles found an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.

Battles is leaving the small private school to become Hardaway’s next head football coach, pending approval from the Muscogee County School Board at the March 17 meeting.

“There is the opportunity to step up to the next level and compete at the Class AAAA level,” Battles said. “Hardaway is a good place, and it was the right opportunity.”

Moving from a Class A school to a AAAA one, Battles realizes that he’ll have some adjustments to make.

“I'm going from a school with 150 kids to one with more than 1,500,” he said. “It’s still going to be 11-on-11 on the field. Hardaway brings some good things, and hopefully we are going to bring some good things. The combination should be pretty interesting.”

Who will be the Class AAA champ

I haven't quite processed everything that happened last night in the second-round boys games. So I'll get back to that later.

I can tell you on the other hand who will win the girls title, but I can't pin-point one exact team. But it will either be Kendrick or the team that beats the Lady Cherokees.

I know, I know, way to go out on a limb. But if history continues, then I'm going to be right. Kendrick has lost to the eventual state champ each of the last four years and five of the last six years.

The only time Sterling Hicks' team didn't lose to the state champ was in 2003 when the Cherokees lost to Hephzibah. The Lady Rebels lost in the title game to Mays.

Kendrick's other losses go like this:
2002 to Glenn Hills, the AAAA champ
2004 to St. Pius, the AAAA champ
2005 to Hephzibah, the AAA champ
2006 to Avondale, the AAA champ
2007 to East Hall, the AAA champ

Good basketball..... Finally?

I must admit I actually look forward going to the Region 2-AAA tournament today.

And if you have seen the first couple of days, you would think I'm crazy to say that. I know I have seen a half-dozen boring and uninspiring basketball games the last two days.

But with that said, it can only get better. And today is that day... I hope.

The opening game between the Columbus and Jordan girls should be entertaining. If the Lady Blue Devils can control the tempo, it will be a nailbiter. Or it can be a blowout like it was last Friday. (Jordan won 67-52.)

The Carver and Spencer boys also should be competitive. Carver lost the first one 58-52, but cruised 86-55 in the second one. This one could depend on which Carver team shows up.

If there was a game that look like it should be one-sided the Hardaway and Northside game is it. So with that said, it will likely be the best game of the day. Hardaway won both meetings, including a 20-point win on Feb. 1.

In the final game -- LaGrange and Northside -- I would give the Patriots the edge but the teams split during the regular season.

It's got to get better, right?

Region 4-A seedings delayed

Region 4-A was supposed to have its seeding meeting today for its tournament that is scheduled to begin on Wednesday in Greenville. But a makeup game between Schley County and Central-Talbotton is being played tonight.

The seeding meeting will take place on Tuesday. As soon as I get it, I will post the seedings and the schedule.

The winner of that Schley County and Central-Talbotton game tonight will be the third seed on the boys side behind Greenville and Chattahoochee County.

On the girls side, Taylor County is the No. 1 seed and Greenville is No. 2.

Colby Rasmus among prospects to watch

The former Russell County standout Colby Rasmus has been impressing baseball people since being drafted 28th overall in the 2005 MLB draft.

He'll leave for St. Louis Cardinals spring training next week, he'll had the chance to earn a spot on the roster.

During the offseason, the Cardinals traded away center fielder Jim Edmonds to the San Diego Padres.

Rasmus is considering by minorleaguebaseball.com as the seventh-best prospect.

Hardaway wins toss

Hardaway won this morning's coin toss and will be the No. 3 seed in the girls Region 2-AAA tournament, which begins today at Northside, according to tournament director Nathan Laney.

Whether Hardaway coach Kendall Mills correctly called the toss or Columbus High coach Candace Turner incorrectly called it is unknown. And it doesn't make a difference.

The Lady Hawks will play the winner of tonight's play-in game between Shaw and Troup on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. Mills said he has no intention of scouting the game, rather he's taking his 3-year-old daughter Jordan to cheerleading practice tonight.

The Lady Blue Devils play Harris County on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Seeding challenge

I felt like I was in the twilight zone this weekend when the seedings came out for the Region 2-AAA tournment that starts Monday at Northside.

I had plenty of questions, like I did last year, and no answers. I didn't see a good end for this. I talked to a variety of coaches and other Muscogee County School District employees and got a variety of answers for how something was done.

I got the first bracket and saw Hardaway was No. 3 and Columbus was No. 4. This made sense because everyone said the whitebook was the tiebreaker.

A few hours later, I received another bracket and the two schools were reversed. What happened?

I asked everyone what changed? And the answer always started....."Well you see Robert...."

I still had questions. I didn't know what the tiebreaker was and I was trying to fiure out what the right seeding was.

I knew this much... Both Hardaway and Columbus finished the region with a 14-6 record. The teams split the two regular season games – Hardaway won the first meeting 70-58 on Nov. 17 and the Blue Devils won the second meeting 62-58 on Jan. 11.

So I opted to get the region's by-laws and solve the problem for myself. So I did that, I found out the tiebreaker was best winning percentage against Class AAA teams.

I told myself, well Hardaway is the No. 3 seed because they won more games in the Christmas tournament. I failed to process that the Lady Hawks beat Russell County -- not a AAA team.

After reviewing the schedule, a few more times it dawned on me. (OK, I'm not that smart.) They have the same record. Both teams are 15-7.

And finally at 7:30 Sunday, tournament director Nathan Laney called me to tell me it would come down to a flip. Like I had just a few minutes earlier, Laney figured out the tiebreaker.

So there will be a coin flip. And then they'll play basketball.... Yes, basketball.

Region 2-AAA seedings coming soon

The Region 2-AAA coaches are meeting this morning to seed the teams for the upcoming tournament, which begins on Monday at Northside.

As soon as I have all the seedings, I'll post it and the schedule.

This much I know:

There will be a boys and girls play-in game on Monday. The girls at 5:30, and the boys at 7 p.m.

Kendrick is the top seed on the girls side, and Jordan is the top seed on the boys side.

It appears that the Shaw boys, and the Carver girls locked up the No. 2 seeds with wins last night. (NOTE: THIS MIGHT NOT BE 100 percent accurate).

When I have the list, I'll post it.

Not pretty

Expect some teams the next couple of weeks to "take the air out of the ball" when they play the Glenwood boys.

For the second time this season, Edgewood did it allowing them to stay close. The only problem was that the Wildcats lost both games to Glenwood.

It's not good enough just to stay close, the goal is to win. The Gators did that on Friday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala., with a 37-25 win.

So if teams going to limit the number of possession, they have to be able to score. Scoring only 25 points isn't enough.

The Gators are two wins away from repeating, it will be interesting.

Confusion at top

For some of the Region 2-AAA girls basketball coaches, their message is simple: Just win.

A handful of teams can control their own destiny as they enter the final week of region play. While the top spot has been determined for a few weeks, the No. 2 seed and an automatic berth in the Class AAA playoffs is still up for grabs. Kendrick has entered the top spot and is 18-0 in region play.

Carver and Hardaway both enter the week with a 13-5 mark. Jordan is 12-6, and Columbus High is 11-6.

Most of the teams play one another this week, so it will be interesting. If both Carver and Hardaway win on Tuesday night, they'll play one another for the No. 2 spot on Friday.

Here are the Region 2-AAA girls standings:
Kendrick 18-0
Carver 13-5
Hardaway 13-5
Jordan 12-6
Columbus 11-6
Spencer 11-7
LaGrange 3-14
Harris County 3-15
Shaw 3-15
Troup 2-15

Glenwood teams seeded second

Both of the Glenwood teams enter the Alabama Independent School Association playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

The Lady Gators will open the Class AAA playoffs on Friday at 4 p.m. against Pickens at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. The Gators will open their title defense against No. 8 Edgewood at 5:30.

Despite being seeded second, the Gators will play the lowest-seeded team in the tournament because it can't play an area opponent in the first round. Lee-Scott was the seventh seed and can't play its rival. The Warriors take on top-seeded Bessemer in the first round.

Glenwood won both the boys and girls AAA title in 2007. In order to repeat, the Gators will likely have to upset the top seed. Faith is the No. 1 seed on the girls side, while Bessemer is the top seed on the boys side.

Chase for perfection

After watching the Super Bowl last night, I started thinking about just how difficult it is to go undefeated.

The Patriots learned the hard way, winning their first 18 games before losing in the final minute to the Giants 17-14. Only one team the 1972 Dolphins have gone unbeaten in pro sports. (Thank heavens, we can continue to hear from Mercury Morris.)

In college basketball, it's been more than 30 years since Bobby Knight's Indiana team completed a perfect season.

So with that being the case, I wonder whether the Jordan boys (23-0) and the Kendrick girls (23-0) can finish the perfect season. The Lady Cherokees have been close before, but lost in the 2006 semifinals to Avondale. Jordan almost lost last week to Spencer, but the Red Jackets held on for a two-point win.

Maybe they can call the Carver football team and ask for some pointers. What do you think? Will the Red Jackets go unbeaten and win a second title? Can Kendrick run the table and capture that elusive title?

I guess we'll know in a month.

Interesting stuff

There have been a bunch of movement in the coaching ranks in Georgia the last couple of days. No, there's no word out of Northside. But it's my understanding that it won't be long until the Patriots have their new coach.

So on to teams that have found a coach. Jones County has its new coach and it's Dwight Jones. Jones, who left Northside after the 2005 season for McIntosh, has found another job.

Jones has accepted the Jones County head football job, school superintendent Jim LeBrun confirmed Tuesday afternoon, according to the Macon Telegraph. He went just 2-18 at McIntosh.

Former Hoover coach Rush Probst has accepted the job at Colquitt County, according to the AJC.

We'll just leave it as that.

Tuberville, Franklin visit Fortson

Carver wide receiver Jarmon Fortson had a couple of visitors on Tuesday evening at his basketball game against Harris County.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin spent the evening watching one of their most highly touted verbal commitments play basketball.

Tuberville and Franklin spent most of the second half sitting with Fortson's mother, Sandra Puckett. Tuberville's visit came just two days after Fortson left an official visit at Florida State.

"I try not to think about the whole recruiting process while I play basketball," Fortson said after Carver's win against Harris County. "It's nice to have Coach Tuberville here to watch me play."

Fortson said he is still committed to Auburn, but he also said his trip to Tallahassee, Fla., "was a lot of fun."

The 6-foot-3 receiver that is ranked the sixth-best prospect in the state by Rivals.com doesn't know when he'll make his final decision.

"It's been really crazy," he said. "I'm still committed to Auburn. But all the truth will come out on Feb. 6."

Feb. 6 is national signing day, and he'll sign a national letter of intent with one of the schools. Carver is expected to sign in the afternoon.

"I really like both schools, and that's why it is so hard to decide," he said. "They both are great football teams with great traditions. My decision is really tough. I am going to do more research on both schools and find something I don't like about one. Then, I'll make my decision."

Carver junior Jarvis Jones isn't sure which way Fortson is leaning.

"I try not to put any pressure on him," said Jones, who was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the state by ugasports.com. "He'll let me know what his decision is after he makes it."

Tuberville wasn't the only coach in attendance on Tuesday evening. Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix and Georgia linebackers coach John Jancek were also at the game.

Rosters announced for Bi-City All-Star Classic

The rosters for the second Bi-City All-Star Classic have been released.

Some of the top 20 senior boys and girls from Macon, Chattahoochee, Muscogee, Harris, Troup, Chambers, Lee and Russell counties have been picked.

The game will be played March 22 at Columbus State. There will be a girls game, a boys game, a 3-point shootout and a dunk contest.

Hardaway coach Kendall Mills will coach the East girls, while Jordan's Gerald Turner will coach the East boys.

Four Kendrick girls have been selected to play, while three Jordan boys have been picked.

Here are the rosters:

East girls

Hardaway's Kelly Ellison
LaGrange Academy's Porsha Morgan
Carver's Adobi Agbasi
Spencer's Shikerrie Turpin
Columbus High's Crystal Forman
Columbus' Tionna Crawford
Kendrick's Janae McKinney
Kendrick's Ashlee Barley
Kendrick's Kym Stamps
Kendrick's Mukia Myrick

West girls
Central-Phenix City's Nesfayia Watkins
Russell County's Felicia Truttling
Opelika's Bianca Pitts
Opelika's Ashley Shipman
Opelika's Britnei McCullough
Auburn's Brittany Duerk
Auburn's April Smith
Auburn's Jessica Butler
B.T. Washington's Lamanda Sanders
Beauregard's Lakiva Holcey

East boys
Jordan's Terrance Hill
Jordan's Steve Peterson
Jordan's Winford Ivey
Carver's Jarmon Fortson
Spencer's Scotty Hood
Spencer's Kahlee Tyler
Shaw's Rearkus McCrory
Northside's Lamar Brown
Brookstone's Allen Page
Pacelli's Jacquise Terry

West boys
Smiths Station's Alex Phillips
Russell County's Xaveria Horace
Russell County's Rodriquez Thomas
Union Springs' Courtney Mack
Union Springs' Cedric Peebles
Lanett's Meko Jones
Lanett's Jakana Brooks
Auburn's Calvin Smith
Auburn's Lucas Czerkawski
Beauregard's John Ware

With all of these games, there is always someone that gets left out. I haven't really put a lot of thought into who should be there and who shouldn't be, but I am sure some talented players are left out.

The thing that jumps out at me is that there is no one from the Glenwood girls on the team. The Lady Gators went undefeated and won a state title last year and have lost only three times this year.

Guard Kianna Pinkney and forward Alisha Nelson are talented enough to make the team.

Let me know who you think got left out?

Carver's Fortson cracks Top 10

Carver wide receiver Jarmon Fortson is ranked the sixth-best prospect in the state according to Rivals.com's final rankings.

Fortson was ranked No. 38 before the final rankings were released late Monday evening. The 6-foot-3, 220 pounder helped lead the Tigers to a perfect season and their first state title.

Fortson has verbally committed to Auburn, but he took an official visit to Florida State this past weekend.

The only players ranked ahead of Fortson are: Buford's Omar Hunter (committed to Florida), Cass' Richard Samuel (Georgia), Statesboro's DeAngelo Tyson (Georgia), Jefferson County's A.J. Harmon (Georgia) and Cedar Grove's Josh Jarboe (Oklahoma).

Full region schedule

Region 1-AAAA, which includes Hardaway and Harris County, will play the other eight teams in the region for football the next two seasons.

Harris County athletic director Bryce Robinson said it's still to be determined whether the region will sub-divide for all the other sports. He prefers the a sub-divided region to limit the amount of travel. That was the same reason that the Tigers petitioned the GHSA to change regions, which was rejected.

If the region splits, it would likely be Harris County, Hardaway, Jones County, Upson-Lee and Westside-Macon. The other side would be Lee County, Thomas County Central, Bainbridge and Americus-Sumter. This is what the GHSA recommended.

Harris County will open the football season with Eastside and Northeast-Macon before region plays starts, according to Harris County coach Tommy Parks.

Lady Blue Devils struggling

Columbus High has hit a rough patch during the last week, losing a pair of Region 2-AAA games.

The Lady Blue Devils lost 64-46 to Carver on Tuesday and lost 64-42 on Friday night to Northside.

Columbus is going to have to regroup, if it's going to make the playoffs this season.

The Blue Devils are going to have to do it without point guard Melissa Wallace. She suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the first half against Carver, according to Columbus coach Candace Turner.

Wallace will miss the rest of the season. And the Blue Devils are going to miss her ball-handling ability.

AISA area tournament changes dates

The Class AAA Region 2, Area 2 tournament has moved up a day to allow the coaches to scout opposing teams, Glenwood boys coach Dusty Perdue said.

The basketball tournament was originally scheduled for next Friday and Saturday. But it has been moved to Thursday and Friday. The finals will be played on Friday.

Two teams will advance to the Class AAA AISA state playoffs. The regular-season champion earns an automatic bid. The playoffs begin in two weeks.

The Glenwood boys secured the area title with a 70-48 victory against Macon-East on Friday night.

If the Lady Gators knock off Pike on Tuesday, Glenwood will host the area tournament.

Northside's Vincent wants to play

Northside forward James Vincent, who landed awkwardly on his left knee on Tuesday night against Harris County, expects to play tonight against Columbus High.

Vincent was going up for a dunk early in the second quarter when he was fouled hard by Harris County defender and fell to the court.

Vincent said he’s hurt that knee earlier in the season, and he said it’s just a sprain. He also said the swelling has started to down. Northside coach Kenny Lawrence said the Patriots might sit against Blue Devils and play Saturday night against top-ranked Jordan.

“I will be fine,” Vincent said. “It’s important to me and to the school that I play.”

Northside coaching opening

With Northside football coach Nathan Laney deciding to resign as head coach, Muscogee County has its first opening of the 2008 year.

Just a few years ago, the Patriots were one of the best teams in Muscogee County. Northside went 9-3 and advanced to the second round of the Class AAA playoffs.

Northside has struggled the last few seasons going 3-7 in 2006 and 0-10 in 2007. So whoever the new coach will be has some rebuilding to do.

When I spoke with Northside Principal James Wilson on Wednesday, he said there have been some internal and external candidates.

He wouldn't indicate any candidates, but Wilson did address a few successful former Muscogee County coaches.

When asked if Dwight Jones, who coached Northside in 2005 to its only playoff appearance, had expressed any interest, Wilson said, "I had spoken to Coach Jones."

When asked if former Shaw coach and Dougherty coach Charles Flowers had shown a desire to return to the county that he had so much success in, Wilson said, "No. None."

Wilson then added, "I would hire either one of those if they were available. Those are the type of coaches that we are looking for. They are great teachers, great coaches and great people. But I haven't spoken with either one of them."

With Northside wanting to move quickly, I have a strange feeling that it will hire an experienced, big name coach.

Northside football coach steps down

Northside football coach Nathan Laney has decided to resign after two seasons as the head coach.

Laney said his family played a role in deciding to step down.

"I got a little a boy that we are expecting on July 4," Laney said. "I also got a 3-year-old (Ellison) at home. I didn't do a real good job balancing football and everything else. I didn’t feel that I was able to effectively be a dad and a coach."

Laney expects to be an assistant coach with the Patriots next fall. He plans to continue coaching the offensive line, which he coached before he was promoted to head coach when Dwight Jones left for McIntosh after the 2005 season.

Laney wasn’t able to match the success that the Patriots had in 2005 when they went 9-3 and advanced to the Class AAA second round. He went 3-7 in his first season before going 0-10 in 2007.

Northside principal James Wilson doesn’t have a timetable for finding Laney’s successor, but “would like to move quickly.”

Glenwood lineman commits

Glenwood lineman Bryant Mosely has verbally committed to Alabama State, according to Glenwood coach Tripp Henderson.
Mosely will take his official visit to the Montgomery, Ala., school this weekend.
He becomes the fifth Glenwood player to verbally commit. Branden Williams is committed to Winston-Salem, and Maurice Crawford is committed to Grambling.
Cody Pearcy and William Tanzie have both committed to Huntingdon College.

GSWA hoops poll

I'm a little surprised that the Kendrick girls are ranked third. I have watched them the last few years and they are one of the best teams in the state as the Lady Cherokees have made four straight trips to the final four.
Even more surprising is that they got the most first-place votes, four, and still are third so that tells me some people aren't impressed by Kendrick's 13-0 start.
Jordan is ranked No. 1 on the boys side.
